How we check a claim

Updated 26 September 2026. Fake or Real is an automated research service. Its reports are provisional and can be corrected when better evidence appears.

What we check

We identify the central factual assertion in the submitted public article or post, then break it into specific claims. A homepage, opinion, prediction, joke or inaccessible post may have no single factual assertion we can responsibly stamp. A result concerns the submitted item, never the entire publisher or domain.

How we find evidence

Search tools, existing published fact checks and links in the submitted page help us discover relevant material. Search snippets and another publisher's rating are leads, not proof. We try to read the underlying pages and prefer original records, documents, data and direct statements where they answer the exact claim. We consider the date, named entity, numbers and scope; several sites repeating one source do not make independent confirmation.

How we decide

The analysis compares each claim with cited passages. JEV independently checks whether those passages support, contradict or do not establish the claim. A REAL or FAKE stamp requires enough relevant evidence for the central claim under the site's published evidence rules. Missing or conflicting evidence remains unresolved; absence of proof does not make a claim false. The displayed percentage is an evidence-direction index, not a calibrated probability of truth. Read the cited sources and limitations before relying on a result.

Independence and limits

Sponsors buy placement, never a verdict. We apply the same evidence standard regardless of publisher or claimant. Automated tools can misread pages, miss sources, or extract the wrong claim. We do not authenticate images or video forensically. Report times and source availability can change.

Corrections

See our corrections policy to report a wrong claim, source, date or verdict. Historic scan records are retained; a correction or later review should be visibly linked to the original rather than silently rewriting it.
